Bergamot is a fruit that looks like a mix of an orange and a grapefruit. It starts off green and turns yellow as it ripens. The tree can grow up to four meters tall, and it has star-shaped flowers and smooth leaves. Originally from tropical Asia, the tree is mostly grown in Italy.

The unique smell of bergamot is famous for its use in Earl Grey tea. Bergamot essential oil is named after the city of Bergamo in Italy, where it was first sold. This oil is widely used in perfumes and toiletries, and it, along with neroli and lavender, is the main ingredient in the classic fragrance called 4711 Eau-de-cologne.

Bergamot oil is used in Italian folk medicine for fever, malaria, and worms. It can stimulate the pancreas and liver, has anti-microbial effects on the bronchia, and may help with slow digestion and hypertension. It also acts as a natural toner and detoxifier, preventing premature aging and benefiting oily skin and acne. However, due to its phototoxicity, it should be applied to areas of the skin not exposed to sunlight within 12 hours. This exception doesn't apply to APTIVA's FCF bergamot.

Bergamot oil is well-known for its ability to uplift and relieve fatigue-induced depression. We often used in our essential oil blends and part of our BETTER ME Collection to enhance mental clarity.

As Gabriel Mojay writes in Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit, "Bergamot oil's psychological action depends on its ability to disperse stagnant Chi. This condition can manifest as tension, irritability, and frustration, and if never released or processed, can eventually lead to depression. Bergamot helps us to relax and let go."

Using a FCF Bergamot Essential Oil is Important

The chemical compound in bergamot essential oil (bergapten) can be toxic to the skin if applied topically and then exposed to UV sunlight.

APTIVA's FCF represents an alternative production method of steam distillation to remove these phototoxic compounds so that the bergamot essential oil FCF (Furocoumarin-free) can be more safely used in topical applications or blended with a suitable carrier oils to be applied directly to the skin.
