The bitter orange tree comes from China and India. It was cultivated by Arabs in the Mediterranean during the 10th and 11th centuries. The tree's oil was first distilled in the early 17th century. The name "neroli" is said to have come from an Italian princess and Countess of Nerola named Anne-Marie de la Tremoille. She used the oil for perfumes, bathwater, and fragrant gloves. Neroli is still used today in traditional eau de cologne.
Neroli is also called "orange blossom." It takes about 1000 lbs of orange blossoms to make 1 lb of neroli oil. In the past, orange petals symbolized marriage, and brides used to wear orange buds in their hair.
Neroli oil's quality is affected by multiple factors. Blossoms need gentle picking when they start to bloom, preferably during warm, sunny days. Avoid damaging the flowers and don't mix in leaves or stems.
Hundreds of pounds of this rare flower yield only a small vial of precious oil. Craftsmen who specialize in this unique craft enjoy creating high-quality natural products with healing properties. The delightful scent of neroli attracts bees, resulting in delicious orange blossom honey. In the past, neroli was used to add a cheerful fragrance to the bedchambers of Arabian princesses and the scarves of European noblewomen.
Regarded as the "happy oil," neroli provides therapeutic relief for stress, anxiety, worry, and depression. Its citrusy scent uplifts the mind, rescues the heart, and fortifies the spirit in times of hardship. Inhaling neroli oil strengthens the brain and nervous system, calming sensory overload. Its emotional well-being resembles the nourishing effects of Mediterranean sunshine. When unable to escape troubles, immersing yourself in neroli's aura is a great alternative. Using neroli regularly can alleviate modern-day frustrations, like in car aromatherapy—it has been scientifically proven to calm over-caffeinated and hyperactive mice.
Neroli oil is great for relaxation and can help with anxiety, depression, fear, shock, and stress. It also soothes the digestive system, relieving spasms, colitis, and diarrhea. Besides, it aids in insomnia and is a highly sedative oil that can treat depression, anxiety, shock, heart palpitations, headaches, neuralgia, and vertigo. Moreover, it acts as a tonic during recovery and revitalizes the body.
Neroli is a favorite for its skin cell regeneration. It helps with scar prevention, smoother skin, preventing stretch marks, and healing broken capillaries.
